The Power Behind Every Creative Work

When I was a child, storytime didn’t end with the last page of a book—it happened around the dinner table. Long after dessert, my family would linger, trading tales from our day. Laughter. Lessons. Little windows into each other’s worlds. That’s where I first saw the power of story to connect and transform.

I’m Linda Evans Shepherd—author of 39 books, speaker, and founder of the Advanced Writers and Speakers Association. Whether I’m writing a screenplay or a novel, a book about prayer, speaking at a conference, or helping creatives hone their craft, I know this: story is the golden thread that ties everything together.

At The Well Conference, I’ll teach four engaging workshops designed to help you master communication and storytelling—no matter your platform. From crafting books to commanding the stage, we’ll explore how story brings your message to life.

Why Story Matters to Creatives of Faith:

Story Isn’t Just for Novelists

Stories are how we learn, grow, and transform. Even nonfiction writers and speakers need story—not to invent facts, but to reveal meaning and stir hearts. Story breathes life into truth.

Jesus Modeled It Best

Jesus didn’t hand out outlines. He told stories. “Jesus always used stories and illustrations when speaking to the crowds. In fact, He never spoke to them without using such parables.” (Matthew 13:34, NLT)

He drew people into scenes they could see and feel. And when He told a story—people remembered it.

A Story from My Journey

Not long ago, the airport shuttle van dropped me off at my car in long-term parking. As I reached for my keys, panic set in—they were gone. I searched my purse, carry-on, and even my coat pockets. Nothing.

When I was about to give up and call for help, I paused and asked God for direction. That’s when I thought to check the lining of my purse. And wouldn’t you know—it had a tiny tear, and the keys had slipped right through into the hidden space between the fabric and the base.

When I shared that story from the stage, people laughed, nodded, and leaned in because they’ve all had that moment of panic and unexpected rescue. The story wasn’t about keys—it was about how we often find what’s missing when we pause and look deeper.

That’s what story does. It creates a connection. It transforms everyday moments into meaningful illustrations.

Whether you’re a speaker, author, playwright, dancer, or visual artist—story is your superpower.
