The enlightenment and scientific revolution impacts how humans encounter the world so extensively it’s difficult to imagine any other way of being. Yet our Scriptures, particularly our Hebrew Scriptures, were formed by and for concrete thinkers with a communal identity. The cultural gap between those who created and preserved Scriptures and modern readers is wide. It is, perhaps, summed up well in the reminder by Hebrew professor Dr. Tom Boogaart, “Jesus didn’t say think about me. He said follow me.” Modern Christians tend to comfortably spend time thinking about Jesus yet struggle to decipher what it means to follow him.
In this session we’ll explore ways to read the Hebrew Scriptures with a more concrete lens. We’ll explore a particular text and push ourselves to come to scripture with a little less abstract thought and a few more earthy actions.
