If you missed Part One, not to worry! You can still attend this one! I will do my best to catch you up and we’ll have fun painting together.
If you have a preferred medium to paint in and can bring it, go right ahead. I’m going to be using Gouache for ease of use in the demonstrations and hands on for anyone who didn’t bring an art medium.
There’s something sacred about setting up your easel outdoors and painting directly from God’s creation. With the changing light, the fresh air, and the challenge of capturing a moment in time, plein air painting connects us to both our Creator and our craft in unique ways.
Since early 2025, a small group of us has been painting en plein air locally and learning from each other. The key to painting well is to paint often, and plein air helps with that. Whether you’ve been intimidated by the idea of painting outdoors or have tried it but felt overwhelmed, this session will give you the foundational principles and practical confidence to succeed.
You’ll learn:
- How to simplify complex outdoor scenes into paintable compositions FAST
- The secret of working with (not fighting against) changing light
- Essential color principles that make outdoor paintings come alive (don’t touch the tube of green paint!)
- Practical setup tips that prevent common frustrations
This class will be ideal for any artists and doodlers who paint indoors but are curious about plein air, or those who’ve tried outdoor painting but struggled with where to start. All skill levels are welcome, but please note that I assume you have some prior experience with drawing or painting in at least one preferred medium. I usually work in Acrylic or Gouache.
