The Spacious Place

By Jeri Howe

Do you ever feel stuck in your creative journey? We’ve all gone through times like that, haven’t we? We want you to know that you’re not alone. The Well community is here to help you along and pray for you. We invite you to read this devotional by one of our conference chaplains, Jeri Howe. What wonderful insight she has to share!

The Spacious Place

David knew what it was like to be faced with obstacles when he was trying to make progress. Even though God had identified him as His chosen leader and he had been anointed king, the path to the throne was not straightforward. It took him years of fighting battles before he was finally ruling Israel. When God had delivered him through all those battles and difficulties, he sang the words of Psalm 18 to the Lord. Part of it reads:

16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. 17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. 19 He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. Psalm 18:16–19 (NIV)

While praying for those who will attend The Well this year, verse 19 came to mind. Although there are obstacles, real and perceived, before us, God gives us all freedom to follow Him. Our path may not be a straight line, but that does not mean He is not guiding us. It does not mean that He did not call us to do this creative work. And it does not mean that He has abandoned us.

God delights in you. He delights in your desire to serve Him with your work. He delights in being involved in your entire creative process,  however long it takes. You may feel confined by obstacles and difficulties, but God brings you out into a spacious place. Take a deep breath, take a step forward, and create.
